...and three to go!

Woodchucks, that is.

For those that don't know, I have a very large (1 acre) yard. About half way out the back of the property is a storage shed where (last count) 5 woodchucks had taken up residence.

I really didn't mind the first one that showed up out there. It was like having my own Puxatawny Phil. Unfortunately, Phil decided to invite his four friends over and turned my yard into a life-size game of Whack-A-Mole.

If they had just stayed under the shed, I would have ignored them. But NOOOOO.... They decided that they needed their own little subway system. I noticed it when I was mowing the lawn with the tractor and just about lost a front wheel down a hole.

So I tried plugging the holes. They dug them back out. I tried putting large rocks in the holes. They dug around the rocks and made the holes bigger. The giant hamsters from Hell had to go.

I'd had enough, so I called in a professional. The pro was a little wary because it's getting to the time of year when the little monsters go into hibernation. I insisted they were still out and about and that as we spoke, one was nibbling on my lawn next to the shed... mocking me.

So the wildlife pro came yesterday and set up 3 traps around the shed. I checked them first thing this morning, and sure enough we had one. By 1 this afternoon, there was another. The annoying little furballs are to be released out in the woods about 15 miles away. Sounds like a much better place for them.

Just as long as they don't run into the coyotes...
